Cassa Rurale di Moena is a small rural cooperative bank serving the Ladin-speaking community of Moena in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. In 1978, many Italian casse rurali issued low-denomination scrip ("miniassegni") to paper over a chronic shortage of small coins that had plagued Italy through the 1970s — a shortage so severe that telephone tokens, candy, and postage stamps were routinely substituted as change in everyday transactions.
These local scrip notes were technically cheques payable to the bearer, a legal workaround that sidestepped the state monopoly on currency. The Banca d'Italia eventually moved to suppress the practice, making surviving examples from smaller community issuers like Moena proportionally scarce.
