This is a fiduciary note — a "miniassegno" — issued by a savings bank to alleviate the catastrophic small-change shortage that gripped Italy through the mid-1970s. The coin crisis was so severe that banks, businesses, and municipalities all began printing their own low-denomination substitutes, with the Bank of Italy grudgingly tolerating the practice rather than endorsing it. The Mezzolombardo branch designation makes this a geographically specific issue within the broader Cassa di Risparmio di Trento e Rovereto network — branch-specific miniassegni are consistently scarcer than head-office issues.
The series was nominally redeemable at face value but widely traded at a discount by 1977.
