Issued to mark the sixth anniversary of Croatian independence, this piece was struck the same year Tuđman's health was deteriorating sharply — he would be dead within two years, though his illness was kept from the Croatian public for much of that period. The Croatian National Bank released it while the man depicted was still in power, making it an unusually immediate form of official commemoration rather than posthumous tribute.
