Issued as part of Paraguay's mid-1970s commemorative silver program, this piece marks the Jesuit reduction of La Santísima Trinidad del Paraná, founded in 1706 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Jesuit reductions of Paraguay were among the most ambitious social experiments in colonial Latin America — self-sustaining communities that the Crown ultimately dismantled in 1767 when it expelled the Society of Jesus from all Spanish territories.
The ruins at Trinidad are the most intact surviving reduction complex in the region.
