Paraguay declared independence on May 14–15, 1811 — the precise dating remains a point of national debate, with the 14th marking the initial uprising and the 15th the formal deposition of the Spanish governor. The 2011 bicentenary prompted an unusually broad commemorative program from the Banco Central, of which this silver issue was among the higher-denomination pieces. Paraguay's post-independence history was catastrophic enough that the country nearly ceased to exist: the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870) killed an estimated 60–70% of the population, leaving the commemorative tradition of Paraguayan statehood freighted with that context.
