Paraguay's 1973 silver commemorative program was an unusually ambitious undertaking for a landlocked South American nation with no particular connection to European Renaissance art. The series was produced primarily for the collector export market under the Stroessner government, which actively courted foreign currency revenue through numismatic contracts with European minting firms during the early 1970s.
Dürer died in Nuremberg in 1528, and his 1471 birth year places this issue near the 502nd anniversary — an interval that suggests the series was assembled thematically rather than around any precise historical milestone.
