附加信息

Kiribati achieved independence on 12 July 1979, becoming one of the last Pacific island groups to separate from British colonial administration. The former Gilbert Islands had been jointly administered with the Ellice Islands until 1975, when the Ellice Islands withdrew to form Tuvalu — leaving the Gilberts to proceed toward independence alone. This gold issue was struck specifically for that occasion, a common practice among newly independent Pacific states seeking both foreign exchange and philatelic-numismatic revenue from the outset of sovereignty.

The .917 fineness follows the traditional crown gold standard long associated with British Commonwealth commemorative issues of this period.
