The commemorative date span 1819-1969 appears in the lower field beneath the emblem. A circular legend reading 150 TH· ANNIVERSARY · FOUNDING OF SINGAPORE runs around the upper periphery, with the coin struck to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the British founding of the port settlement. |

Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Stamford Raffles establishing a British trading post at Singapore in 1819, this was among the first gold coins struck under the Monetary Authority of Singapore following separation from Malaysia in 1965. The four-year gap between independence and this issue reflects how long it took the new republic to establish its own mint infrastructure and monetary framework — Singapore had no domestic minting capability and relied on external production for its early coinage.
