Obverse description The obverse bears the mature effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, as modelled by Susanna Blunt, her hair arranged in an elegant upswept coiffure with soft curled waves, adorned with a pearl necklace and drop earring. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field, with the engraver's initials 'SB' discreetly placed below the truncation. The legend 'ELIZABETH II' arcs along the upper left rim and 'D·G·REGINA' along the upper right, both in spaced serif capitals.

Additional information

The Year of the Rat opened the third cycle of the Chinese zodiac's 60-year sexagenary calendar in 2020, making this issue marginally more significant within the series than a mid-cycle animal year. Canada's Chinese-Canadian community, among the oldest and largest in the Western Hemisphere — dating to the railroad labor migrations of the 1880s — has driven consistent collector demand for RCM lunar issues since the series began. The 18-karat gold alloy used here is atypical for RCM bullion work, chosen primarily to achieve a warmer color register than standard .9999 gold.
