Additional information

Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's ongoing 18-karat lunar series, this issue marks the Year of the Ox in the traditional Chinese zodiac cycle — a deliberate commercial outreach to Canada's substantial Chinese-Canadian community, which by 2009 numbered well over one million. The series launched in 2000 with the Year of the Dragon and has continued uninterrupted since, with each release sold exclusively as a collectible at a significant premium over melt value.

The 18-karat standard was chosen to keep production costs competitive against comparable issues from the Perth Mint and other sovereign producers targeting the same market.
