Reverse description Full-color reproduction of Caravaggio's masterpiece 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist' (1608), rendered in exceptional chromatic detail across the entire rectangular field of the coin. The scene depicts the aftermath of the martyrdom within a prison courtyard: the executioner stoops over the prostrate figure of Saint John, while Salome kneels holding a golden platter to receive the severed head. An elderly woman gestures in horror at left, a soldier stands at center, and a prisoner observes through a barred window at upper right. The dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and somber palette characteristic of Caravaggio's late Maltese period are faithfully reproduced, and the composition is framed in a gilded decorative border evoking an ornate picture frame.
