The 1995 Platinum Maple Leaf Lynx issue belongs to the Royal Canadian Mint's wildlife bullion program launched in 1990, which was designed specifically to compete with the American Platinum Eagle before that coin even existed — the U.S. didn't introduce its platinum bullion series until 1997. Canada held the field essentially alone among major Western mints for those seven years. The lynx reverse was rotated through the series alongside other Canadian fauna, each year carrying a different animal to drive collector demand beyond pure bullion interest.
