| Obverse description | Concentric circular design bearing multiple Arabic inscriptions arranged in bands radiating outward from a central roundel. The innermost roundel contains the Arabic word for Revolution (الثورة) flanked by the date 17-30 Tammuz (تموز) and the year 1968 in Arabic numerals, commemorating the Ba'ath Revolution. The intermediate band carries the legend الجمهورية العراقية (Republic of Iraq) and a reference to the Ba'ath Party. The outer band bears additional Arabic inscriptions recording the AH date 1398 and the Gregorian date 17-30 Tammuz 1978, forming a full commemorative epigraphic composition in the field. |

Issued to mark the tenth anniversary of the Ba'ath Party's July 1968 coup — the bloodless takeover that ousted President Abd al-Rahman Arif and brought Ahmad Hassan al-Bakr to power, with Saddam Hussein consolidating control behind the scenes from the outset. The series was struck in limited quantities for presentation and collectors rather than circulation, a common practice for Iraqi commemoratives of this period.
By 1978, Hussein's grip on the state security apparatus was total. Al-Bakr would resign the following year under circumstances widely described as coerced.
