Yugoslavia hosted the 1979 Mediterranean Games in Split, and this issue was struck the preceding year as part of the fundraising and commemorative program surrounding the event — one of the larger international sporting gatherings the country had organized to that point. Tito's government used such occasions deliberately to project Yugoslav non-alignment and openness to both Eastern and Western audiences.

The .925 fineness is notably higher than the .750 silver used in many Yugoslav commemoratives of the same decade.
