Thailand hosted the 8th World Orchid Conference in Bangkok in 1978, one of the few times the event had been held in Asia. The commemorative issue was authorized specifically to mark the occasion, reflecting both the country's prominence in orchid cultivation and the Bhumibol administration's use of collector coinage as soft diplomatic currency throughout the 1970s.
