Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of UNICEF, this coin was part of a broader Indonesian commemorative program released in the immediate aftermath of the country's 1997–98 financial collapse. Bank Indonesia was, at the time, still managing the wreckage of a currency that had lost roughly 80% of its value against the dollar in under a year. A gold commemorative aimed at international collectors was a reasonable revenue play under the circumstances.
