| Obverse description | Within an ornate Baroque cartouche surmounted by elaborate foliate scrollwork, the winged Lion of St. Mark is depicted facing, holding the Gospel book in its forepaws — the traditional emblem of the Evangelist and of the Venetian Republic. The denomination numeral 140 (denoting the value in soldi) appears in the lower exergue flanked by pellets. The surrounding legend SANCTVS MARCVS VENET runs along the outer border within a beaded inner circle, the whole contained within a milled border. |
