China's Panda gold series launched in 1982 as one of the first bullion programs from the People's Republic aimed explicitly at international collector markets. The 25th anniversary in 2007 prompted a suite of commemorative issues across multiple sizes, of which this is the smallest denomination struck. Unlike the annual Panda bullion coins, which famously change their reverse design each year, anniversary issues occasionally revisit earlier designs — a deliberate nod to the series' own collecting history.
