| Opmerkingen |
Issued by the Armée Catholique et Royale — the insurgent Vendéen forces fighting the French Republic — this is one of the rarest categories of revolutionary-period paper: counter-revolutionary emergency currency. The Vendée uprising produced its own financial apparatus out of necessity, and these notes, signed by Jean-Nicolas Stofflet, one of the four principal Vendéen generals, circulated within rebel-held territory in the Loire-Anjou region during the insurrection's most brutal phase.
Stofflet was himself executed by firing squad in February 1796, which gives his signature here a particular documentary weight. Notes bearing his hand are scarcer than those of other Vendéen commanders.
