The 15 soldi denomination was introduced by Vittorio Amedeo III specifically to facilitate troop payments and minor commercial transactions as the kingdom scrambled to finance resistance against Revolutionary France. Piedmont was under sustained military pressure from 1792 onward, and the coinage of this period reflects a treasury increasingly strained by wartime expenditure.
French forces ultimately occupied Turin in December 1798, ending the issue. Coins struck in the final year of the run rarely show heavy circulation wear — the political collapse came before they had time to accumulate it.
