Two small floral rosettes are placed symmetrically in the lower field beneath the ground line. The encircling Latin legend SANCT·MARCVS·VEN· identifies the patron saint of Venice and proclaims the Venetian Republic. The composition follows the long-established iconographic tradition of the Winged Lion as the emblem of Venetian sovereignty. |
