Issued to commemorate the inaugural Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix held at Sepang International Circuit in 1999, this coin arrived at a fraught moment — Malaysia was still clawing back from the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis that had halved the ringgit's value and forced the government to impose capital controls. Celebrating a RM1.5 billion state-backed motorsport facility while the economy was still in recovery was a deliberate political statement by Mahathir Mohamad's administration about national ambition.

Petronas had signed as title sponsor of the Williams F1 team in 1995, giving Malaysia its first foothold in the sport before the country even had a race to host.
