The sphere is depicted with intersecting rings representing the celestial circles, reflecting the maritime and imperial symbolism of the Portuguese Crown. The overall design is plain with minimal peripheral ornamentation, consistent with the utilitarian nature of this low-denomination copper issue. Two known varieties exist: the Big armillary sphere (Gomes J6.09.0) and the Small armillary sphere (Gomes J6.26.0), distinguished by the relative size of the central device. |
