Canteen tokens issued by German paper mills during the First World War proliferated as small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation — hoarded by the public and consumed by wartime metal demands. This zinc piece was produced for internal use at the Neustadt im Schwarzwald paper factory, redeemable only within the works canteen and carrying no value beyond its walls. Zinc was the default substitute material, copper and nickel having been requisitioned for munitions production by 1916.
