15 Pesetas Begur; Cooperativa Bagurense

Begur is a small hilltop town in the Costa Brava interior, and the Cooperativa Bagurense was among hundreds of local consumer cooperatives and municipal bodies across Catalonia that issued their own emergency fractional scrip during the anarchic first months of the Spanish Civil War — roughly mid-1936 onward — when Republican-zone coin hoarding caused near-total collapse of small-change circulation. These notes had no legal standing beyond the goodwill of the issuing body and the closed economy of the community that honored them.

The thick card stock format was typical of cooperative scrip rather than municipal issues, where a slightly more durable substrate helped notes survive repeated handling in a single-shop or market context.
