Beschrijving voorzijde Left-facing draped bust of Ernest of Bavaria, Prince-Bishop of Liège, depicted as an elderly bearded figure wearing a layered ecclesiastical vestment with an ermine-trimmed cloak. The effigy is rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail to the facial features and hair. A beaded inner border frames the bust, with the continuous Latin legend distributed around the periphery. The truncation of the bust is visible at the lower edge of the field.

Aanvullende informatie

Ernest of Bavaria held the Prince-Bishopric of Liège from 1581 until his death in 1612, accumulating ecclesiastical offices with a collector's enthusiasm — he simultaneously held Cologne, Münster, Hildesheim, and Freising. This plurality was politically expedient during the Dutch Revolt, as the Habsburgs needed reliable Catholic magnates anchoring the Lower Rhine corridor. The 1611–1612 dating places this piece in the final year of his rule, struck as the Twelve Years' Truce of 1609 had only just quieted the surrounding conflict.

Dengis 1003 is among the scarcer teston varieties of his long reign.
