| Additional information |
Issued to mark the United Nations International Year of the Child, this coin was produced when Moshoeshoe II was navigating an increasingly fraught relationship with the military-backed government that had suspended Lesotho's constitution in 1970. By 1979 he was king in little more than ceremonial terms, his political authority having been systematically stripped by Prime Minister Leabua Jonathan. The royal name on this piece carried weight in popular legitimacy that it no longer carried in governance.
