The 23rd Summer Universiade was held in Izmir in August 2005 — the first time Turkey had hosted the Games. Izmir beat out several competing cities in a close vote, and the Turkish government used the occasion aggressively for civic promotion, producing a dense run of commemorative issues tied to the event.
KM#1193 is one of several denominations in that commemorative program, each carrying the 15.55g silver specification that Darphane favored for mid-tier collector issues of the period.
