Hultsfred's 1983 local currency issue was part of a brief Swedish municipal experiment in which several small communes issued notgeld-style bronze pieces intended primarily for local trade fairs and cultural festivals. Hultsfreds Kommun, a small municipality in Småland, had no independent monetary authority — these pieces circulated by social convention rather than legal tender status. Long before Hultsfred became internationally known as the home of Sweden's largest rock festival, the town's civic identity leaned heavily on its regional crafts economy.
