The Bishopric of Chur held coinage rights as an imperial estate of the Holy Roman Empire, but by 1703 its monetary output was increasingly squeezed between the dominant cantonal coinages of the Swiss Confederation and the aggressive currency policies of neighboring Austrian territories. Ulrich VII von Mont was the issuing bishop — a figure caught between Hapsburg pressure and local ecclesiastical autonomy throughout his tenure.
The 15 Kreuzer denomination was a working coin, not a prestige issue. Rhaetian silver from local Alpine sources fed the Chur mint intermittently, and output in this period was modest enough that survivors in any condition are infrequently encountered outside Swiss regional collections.
