| Reverse description | St. Rupert, patron saint of Salzburg, is depicted seated facing forward, holding a salt box in his right hand and a crozier in his left, rendered in the baroque ecclesiastical style typical of the period. A mitre device divides the surrounding legend, which commences at approximately 2 o'clock and identifies the saint as Bishop of Salzburg. The date appears at the upper left of the design, and the denomination XV is displayed within a decorative cartouche or frame in the lower field. |

Max Gandolf von Kuenburg ruled the Archbishopric of Salzburg from 1668 until his death in 1687, presiding over a principality that functioned as a sovereign ecclesiastical state within the Holy Roman Empire — with its own mint, its own army, and revenues drawn heavily from the Hallein salt mines. The 15 Kreuzer denomination was a workhorse of regional commerce in the southern German and Austrian lands during this period, filling a gap between the smaller copper issues and the heavier Thaler coinage. Kuenburg was also the archbishop who intensified persecution of crypto-Protestants in the region, a campaign his successor would escalate into outright mass expulsion.
