Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1687 to 1709, and his early tenure coincided with the aftermath of the Great Turkish War — a period when the Habsburg lands were mobilizing enormous financial resources to push Ottoman forces back from Vienna. The Salzburg mint was active throughout this stretch, producing fractional silver in part to meet the practical demands of a region supporting imperial military logistics.
The Zöttl reference numbers spanning 2207–2211 indicate at least five die varieties across the five-year issue window, a detail worth examining on any example before attribution.
