Frederick of Hesse-Darmstadt was appointed Prince-Bishop of Breslau in 1671 through heavy Habsburg pressure, part of Vienna's sustained effort to reassert Catholic authority over Silesia following the Thirty Years' War. The Bishopric's coinage rights were real but politically freighted — every issue a small assertion of ecclesiastical sovereignty in a region where confessional boundaries had been contested for decades. The 15 Kreuzer denomination itself was a workhorse of late 17th-century Central European commerce, filling a gap between the smaller copper and the larger Taler.
Frederick died in 1682, making this 1679–1680 issue one of the final coinages of his episcopate.
