Charles Louis — Karl Ludwig — returned to the Palatinate in 1649 after the Peace of Westphalia restored to him the Lower Palatinate and a newly created eighth electorate, a compromise that satisfied no one but ended decades of dispossession following his father Frederick V's catastrophic acceptance of the Bohemian crown. His mint operations in these years reflect a territory rebuilding from near-total devastation, with coinage struck to re-establish economic function in a region that had been fought over, occupied, and stripped for the better part of thirty years.
