John Philip Holland, the Clare-born engineer whose submarine designs were adopted by both the U.S. Navy and the Royal Navy, spent much of his early career funded by the Fenian Brotherhood — an arrangement that produced the Fenian Ram, a vessel built explicitly to attack British shipping. The irony of the Royal Navy later purchasing his technology was not lost on contemporaries.
The coin was issued to mark the centenary of Holland's death in 1914.
