Four coloured enamel panels depicting the Irish tricolour (green, white, and orange) are applied symmetrically around the inner border at the cardinal points. The upper legend 'THE DEFENCE FORCES – CÉAD BLIAIN' arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination '15 EURO' is inscribed in large letters along the lower border. |

Issued to mark the centenary of the Irish Defence Forces, formally established under the Defence Forces (Temporary Provisions) Act of 1923 following the Civil War ceasefire. The timing of that founding legislation was deliberate — the new state needed to consolidate military authority quickly, absorbing pro-Treaty IRA elements while the anti-Treaty opposition remained active.
KM#109 was struck at the Royal Mint on behalf of the Central Bank, as Ireland has no domestic minting facility.
