Shaw was born in Dublin in 1856 but spent the overwhelming majority of his life in England, a biographical awkwardness the Irish state has historically navigated with selective enthusiasm. He refused his Nobel Prize money in 1925 — accepting only the medal and diploma — and remained a polarizing figure domestically, particularly for his ambivalent stance toward Irish independence and his willingness to provoke on subjects from vegetarianism to Mussolini.
