Reverse description A detailed depiction of the Golden Hind, Sir Francis Drake's famous 16th-century galleon, shown under full sail traversing a stylised choppy sea. The three-masted vessel is rendered in fine relief, with rigging, furled and billowing sails, and hull details clearly delineated. Seagulls are visible in the right field, and twelve five-pointed stars arranged in a ring around the periphery evoke the European Community emblem. The ship's name GOLDEN HIND appears on a scroll-like banner integrated into the wave at the base of the design, with the denomination 15 ECUS inscribed along the lower legend, flanked by stars.
