French numismatic clubs began issuing regional fantasy écus in the early 1990s partly in response to the looming euro, which was already signaling the end of the franc. The Amicale Numismatique du Midi and the Association Numismatique Albigeoise collaborated on this piece tied to Albi, the Tarn prefecture best known as the seat of the 13th-century Albigensian Crusade against the Cathar heresy. The écu denomination itself is a deliberate archaism — the coin has no legal tender status and was struck purely for collector exchange at regional numismatic meets.
