Canada's Lunar New Year series launched in 1998 with the Year of the Tiger, making 2007's Year of the Pig the final issue in the first complete 12-year cycle. The Royal Canadian Mint positioned these as collector pieces aimed squarely at Canadian Chinese communities, a market largely ignored by government mints until the late 1990s.
Being the cycle's last entry drove stronger demand than several mid-cycle issues.
