Australia's lunar bullion series has run continuously since 1996, with the pig appearing in both the first and second series cycles — making 2019 the second time Perth Mint issued a Year of the Pig gold bullion coin, the first being 1995. The .9999 fineness adopted for this series was a deliberate commercial decision to undercut the Canadian Maple Leaf's long-held claim as the world's purest mainstream bullion coin, a rivalry that drove refining standards across the industry through the late 1990s and 2000s.
