Perth Mint's annual Lunar Series I wrapped up with this 2008 Mouse issue, the twelfth and final coin in a run that began with the 1996 Rat — an irony not lost on collectors, since the Mouse and Rat occupy the same position in different Western translations of the Chinese zodiac cycle. The series had by this point built a dedicated secondary market, and final-year issues from similar programs have historically drawn premiums above spot that earlier releases rarely sustain.
The .9999 fineness was Perth's calling card throughout the series, exceeding the .9990 standard common elsewhere at the time.
