Issued to mark the canonization of Mary MacKillop on October 17, 2010 — the first Australian to be declared a saint by the Catholic Church — this coin was released in the same calendar year as the Rome ceremony, an unusually tight production and release window for a commemorative of this type. MacKillop had been beatified by John Paul II in 1995 after two miracles were attributed to her intercession, both involving cancer remissions.
