Australia's gold koala bullion series has shuffled specifications repeatedly since its 1980 launch, but the .9999 fineness standard adopted in later years placed it among the purest mainstream bullion coins available — fractionally purer than the American Eagle and South African Krugerrand. The Perth Mint introduced this benchmark partly to compete with the Royal Canadian Mint's Maple Leaf, which had claimed the .9999 standard first and used it aggressively in marketing to European institutional buyers through the 1990s.
The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was adopted on Australian coinage in 1999.
