Australia's platinum koala series, launched in 1988, was among the first government-issued platinum bullion programs in the world, competing directly with the Soviet Union's platinum Palladium issues and Canada's newly established maple leaf program. The Perth Mint positioned the fractional denominations specifically for collectors who couldn't commit to the one-ounce price point, and the 1/10 oz piece saw the widest retail distribution of the series.
The third portrait of Elizabeth II, by Raphael Maklouf, was already being phased out globally by 1994 in favor of Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy — making this a transitional issue in the series' portrait history.
