Australia's platinum Koala series launched in 1988 as the Perth Mint's direct challenge to the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Platinum Eagle programs that were drawing significant investment demand. The 1/10 oz denomination was designed to provide a lower entry point for platinum bullion buyers, and the series distinguished itself by changing the reverse design annually — a deliberate marketing decision that also created genuine collector demand alongside the investment market.
The 3rd portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Raphael Maklouf, was in use from 1985 until 1998.
