Maials is a small municipality in the Segrià comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, its local cultural association stepped in to issue emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation. The Unió Cultural Recreativa Maialenca — a recreational society, not a bank — became, by necessity, a monetary authority for the duration.
Catalan war-issue notes of this type are catalogued under the Altés reference system rather than Pick, reflecting their purely local circulation. AL#3484 is among the smaller-denomination vales from this municipality.
