Borrassà is a village in the Alt Empordà comarca of Catalonia with a population that has rarely exceeded a few hundred people. During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of Catalan municipalities — including many of this size — issued their own emergency fractional currency after the Republic's small coins vanished from circulation almost immediately following the July 1936 uprising. These local issues, collectively catalogued by Andreu Turró, were stop-gap instruments produced under improvised conditions with whatever printing resources the town could access.
The thick card stock was a practical choice: thinner paper tended to disintegrate quickly in daily use at market and shop level, which is exactly where these céntimos circulated most.
