One of dozens of fractional emergency notes produced by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, when Republican Spain suffered an acute shortage of small metallic currency — silver and copper had largely vanished from circulation through hoarding and wartime disruption. The Ajuntament de Barcelona issued multiple denominations to keep retail transactions functioning in the city.
Turró catalogues these Barcelona municipal notes meticulously; #306 places this 15 céntimos piece within a well-documented but short-lived series, most of which was rendered obsolete well before the Nationalist capture of Barcelona in January 1939.
