Amphissa controlled the sacred plain of Cirrha, and it was a dispute over that land — the Amphissians had allegedly cultivated territory consecrated to Apollo — that triggered the Fourth Sacred War in 339 BC. Philip II of Macedon exploited the conflict to devastating effect, razing the city entirely. The Amphissa that struck this bronze had been rebuilt, but it never recovered its earlier regional weight.
